Was iTunes a Mistake?

No, I don’t think the service was a mistake, it’s brilliant. I am wondering if the name was a mistake. I love the service but I don’t enjoy telling people to go to iTunes to rent a movie or to go to iTunes to download an application.

I imagine that at it’s birth iTunes was the best name. Remember, it started with music. If it were called iContent or something of the sort could you imagine the branding difficulty from the early stages? “Yeah, just go to iContent and download that tune.” What? Why not go to Amazon for that? So, the name got us to here… now what?

Do you have a better name for what iTunes is now? Maybe, iGoodness or iTsgotitall or…? We know Apple is not opposed to changing the names of things. .Mac is now Mobile Me. It was hard to tell your friends to just use .Mac. They would all look at you with a simple glossed face. I for one, am not sure Mobile Me is much better. “Yeah, use Mobile Me for that.” Really? Which part of Mobile Me? I feel like Mobile Me needs a Common Craft Video or a really talented info graphic artist to make a comprehensive and simple diagram.

Maybe iContent is not all that bad for iTunes. What pops to your mind first when you think of renaming iTunes?
